My Summertime Makeup: Addressing Sweat and Oil Production (Beginner's)

No one likes their makeup in the heat.  This is something we can all connect over.  Even dry skinned lovelies not suffering an increase in oil production still tend to sweat more because of temperature and/or humidity changes.

To those of you who have better makeup in the summer: I hate you and "Teach me!" Dr Strange style.

I don't have all (or many) of the answers but these are a few things I alter slightly to feel better about my face in the heat.

First off you have the option of just not wearing makeup.  It may not be your favourite option but if nothing else you can feel free to wipe the oily sweaty mess that is your face without fear of transferring your eyebrow to your blush or vice versa.  Obviously use a sunscreen appropriate for your skin and environment.

Short of that I would say braid or tie your hair back.  It gets it out of your face meaning it won't stick to you and allows more air to hit your skin.

Now to actual makeup tips.

Try a mattifying primer, especially if you're oily.  I can almost guarantee it won't keep you shine free all day but the barrier will mean that process is delayed meaning some mild-moderate shine come hour 8 rather than patchy breakdown.

Left side is matte thanks to Becca Evermatte, Right side is shiny thanks to suncreen.
In terms of dry girls or those more concerned about sweat aim more towards waterproof makeup.  Waterproof and oil resistant are not at all the same thing.  Water and oil are actually 'enemies' so a product meant to keep one away will likely to nothing to the other.  I can't think of any primers made for this purpose but lots of concealers and foundations claim water-resistance.

Along those lines try a waterproof brow product.  If you use powder I recommend you try a cream-based product (a pomade or pencil) instead as these cling more strongly in place and are less inclined to smudge.  Again go waterproof, I don't know about everyone else but I don't get oily brows, just sweat from my forehead.

NYX's Tame & Frame in Brunette claims a waterproof hold.  I finished it with Brow Mascara.
In terms of coverage for the face if you can't/don't wish to skip foundation entirely then confine a sheer layer to just the places you 'need' it or spot conceal.  For me that would be under my eyes and onto my cheeks and leave everywhere else alone.  Less product to smudge/break down as your day goes on.  This might seem bizarre but it goes along with the 'less-to-smudge' premise: don't set your makeup.  At least not with powder.  Everyone fears cake face and powder is a quick trip there when added to inevitable moisture.

Foundation is worth it for me in that area.
The same premise applies for me with the rest of my face makeup: I tend to skip it entirely to keep it light.  Add bronzer, contour or blush if you 'need to' but definitely skip highlight if you don't like intense glow.

For the eyes if you aren't then use a primer, it helps the stick and longevity of everything on top though if your eyes are a troubled spot for oil or sweat, better safe than sorry, skip the makeup there.  Generally speaking the eyes are one of the safer areas in summer as they don't generally sweat (I do get some transfer from my nose) so if you feel naked already with your face then do a warm smokey eye or a blue cut crease or a red halo, whatever.  Try to skip the big wings though as wear off of those is very noticeable.  Same may apply for mascara on the lower lashes, it can result in smudges at the best of times.

Nice warm rose-gold eye with a teensy bit of lower mascara (plus upper obviously) and a nude gloss.
Finally for lips I personally say do nothing!  Slap on a balm with SPF and move on.  If that doesn't float your boat then maybe a stain will.  Stains are long wearing, comfortable and low maintenance.

Start of the day.
End of the day.  Shiny, bad lighting and tired but intact.
Alright, hopefully I mentioned one or two things you hadn't thought of though all of this stuff is fairly intuitive.  Let me know your tips.  Stay cool and have a swell day,

Cassy
