COSPLAY/HALLOWEEN COSTUME: Star Butterfly from Star vs the Forces of Evil
This is just a fun (hopefully quick) post about the affordable products and steps I used to create a cosplay of Star Butterfly for a party.
Let's just pretend the odd backgrounds aren't a thing. If it makes it more fun we can call it Background Club; it's like Fight Club in that you don't talk about it but not in the whole epic movie sense.
Starting off I would recommend sourcing anything you can't find locally (or not cheaply), online. Duh. For me that was the dress and wig. I really should have bought some kind of sock or stockings but we'll get to that in a bit.
So first off I went to faithful ebay and bought my dress and wig.
On from there I knew I needed the shoes, headband, bag, wand and stockings.
So I bought a pair of devil horns from my local Overflow (akin to 99c store) for $2.50 and pulled off the fuzz that came with it.
I also sealed the dowel and shoe base with Gessup which was fine. Tip: cut the end off your handle before painting.
For the wand I used a lot of white mixed with a bit of pink and a hint of blue and the shoes were painted with an even whiter version.
While the horrendous task of painting occurred my mum helped to organise the other accessories which were mostly craft cardboard. I decided to keep the wand and bag fairly simple (some may say flimsy) so the crown, butterfly, wings and heart were traced and cut out using my mum's fancy Scan 'n Cut. It would not have been any trickier to do by hand. The butterfly and heart were doubled with foam sticky sheets in between to be more 3D. The wand face I simply printed and backed with card and the octopus I printed to trace felt upon. We luckily had the perfect purple ribbon for the newer cleaved wand design.
The bad was all my mum and she followed a craft tutorial online to make it. It's just card with string in the upper sides.
We also used card to finish the shoes after I drew the teeth on.
Both the finishing touches to the shoes and wand were adhered with hot glue.
The final styling was really easy makeup. I put on my normal foundation and did my brows per usual then applied mascara to just my upper lashes. The trickiest part was getting the hearts and I did that by taking a peachy pink lipstick directly to my cheeks and patting a softer peachy pink blush over top with a blending brush.

You can see the result at the end of the night (about 5 hours of wear).

So, if you haven't been paying attention I can let you know that this project only cost me $38.80 to get all of my elements. It would cost you more if you didn't already have felt, cardboard and paint on-hand, but not a tonne. Probably at most $5 for felt and the same for cardboard. The paint is where it could get expensive so shop around for a close colour. The other element you would want to buy are stockings which typically run for $7-15 (for plain colours which would need to be dyed or chalked)
That's everything you need to know to become a magical princess from another dimension. I hope you liked it. Leave any comments or questions below or on my Instagram or Twitter @casicapa22. Have a marvellous day,

Don't you just love the bemused look on my face when I'm told to 'Pose like you're casting a spell...at your mother." |

On from there I knew I needed the shoes, headband, bag, wand and stockings.
So I bought a pair of devil horns from my local Overflow (akin to 99c store) for $2.50 and pulled off the fuzz that came with it.
Then I decided to get ready for the boots so I committed an old pair of ugg boots and estimated how much I would need to cover them and line up my leg with purple felt. The felt was on sale at Spotlight (a homewares store) for $7 per metre and I got half a metre, so $3.50 there.
In that trip I also got a Polyfoam Sphere from Riot (crafts store) for $3.50 and a wooden dowel from Bunnings (hardware store) for $3.30. I got a 125mm ball and a 16mm dowel but that comes down to preference.
The rest of the outfit required items I already had at home because my mum is a craft junkie. So that consisted of felt for the Peter Pan collar and octopus, then paint for the wand as well as light cardboard for the wand and bag and lastly ribbon for the wand and string for the bag. I also used a felt tip pen for smaller details.
You have already seen from the image up top that I added a Peter Pan collar to the dress, that consisted of cutting out a piece of white felt on a template and gluing it on.
Then was the tedious process of cutting a small section off the face of the ball and painting it. I would recommend sealing your polyfoam somehow if you want a smooth surface. I used Gessup but it wasn't good enough. Then came a wood glue debacle which resulted in the mixing of much more paint to cover it up again.
I also sealed the dowel and shoe base with Gessup which was fine. Tip: cut the end off your handle before painting.

Sorry for the blurry image, I hadn't realised. |

Now for the last minute additions which I don't have pictures for. The octopus was actually very last minute and sewed loosely by hand so I can remove it if I want (thanks mum!). Then again thanks to the endless patience of my mother we took some old fabric from purple and orange pants and stitched and glued them to oblivion to make a section which covered the gap around my knees. I would not recommend at all you do this. It was painful both figuratively and literally. You can see that it dug into my legs because off all of the elastic required to hold them up. Buy tights people. Buy orange or fuchsia tights and either chalk or dye them.
