INITIAL IMPRESSIONS: NYX Tame & Frame & Tinted Brow Mascara (Brunette)

I've only used these products a few times each so I make no claims of this being a full and extensive review but I will give my initial impressions of these newish NYX brow products.

To start I will address the products I was previously using and essentially the standard I wanted to match.  For a pomade I was actually using Maybelline's Color Tattoo in 'Tough as Taupe'.  It is many years old and as such very firm and dry, meaning you never pick up a tonne of product and therefore pigment.  When I apply pomade I press/tap the angled brush directly down into the product and then go straight to my face.  The other item I was using was (again a very old) Benefit Gimme Brow in 'Medium/Deep'.  It started out beautiful but I was noticing it was getting clumpy to the point of flakes forming upon application.  Both of these products are quite cool toned which I love.

Maybelline left (ew gross), NYX right

I have fair skin with neutral undertones and dark brown hair which is also quite neutral.  I enjoy both cool and warm tones in my eyeshadow, tend towards neutral-cool lips and apparently really dig cool brows.  This meant that despite NYX's assertion that the shade Brunette in both Tinted Brow Mascara and Tame & Frame was 'ash brown', the colour was very warm compared to what I like/am used to.

NYX Tame & Frame 'Brunette' on top.
Maybelline Color Tattoo 'Tough as Taupe' on bottom.
The colour is my main gripe with these products but colour is very subjective and personalised so redheads or deeper skinned people with differing undertones could have totally different preferences colour-wise.  Take for instance the fact that I very much enjoy using a purple shadow to fill my brows but while pink was fun it didn't get me going in the same way.  I like cool brows, you get the point.

I still have some comments about the formula and format of the products.

First off, screw this packaging.

The boxes they came in were both stupidly unnecessarily big and that ticks me off.  The containers themselves were fine, both plastic and quite functional other than the silly corners shaped into the pomade.

The wand of the mascara was a traditional bristle spiral wand which I hate for lashes but works fine for brows.  It is a lot bigger than the Benefit Gimme Brow so small browed users beware.

A nice amount of product is picked up and deposited which overall makes me prefer this to Gimme Brow which I always had to be careful with lest it place streaks onto my skin.

Tinted Mascara is on your right.  You can see it's a bit orange but combs and defines the hairs well.
The pomade is quite soft.  I doesn't really look like it in the pan, nor feel terrible squishy when I press my brush down, yet when you brush it into your brow you will end up with a streak wherever it is placed.

I can make it work but it took a lot of fussing.
The formula is too wet/oily and almost seems to separate on my with some bits being full opaque and others significantly sheerer. I have read comments about its wetness before and the consensus seems to be that it gets better as it gets drier.  That's all good and well but I don't want to struggle delicately working with a poor formula for months waiting for it to dry out and then using an old product which is nice but probably due to be thrown.

My brows filled in with Tame n Frame.  You may see the patchy orange section at the top of my left (your right) brow.
OVERALL: Brunette is too warm for me.  Love the formula of the Tinted Brow Mascara, strongly dislike the formula of the Tame & Frame.  May repurchase the mascara (dependant on its long term performance), won't repurchase the pomade.

Okay, there is my lukewarm review of two new-to-me NYX brow products.  If you love NYX then check back in the coming weeks as I'm in the process of reviewing the Ultimate Palette in Brights and it's looking much more favourable.  Have a good week,

Cassy
